Birding and Sightseeing

The area surrounding Turner Valley, where the rolling foothills turn to boreal forest before the Rocky Mountains, offers ample opportunity to view some of Alberta’s 385 bird species and witness the splendor of our western peaks and rivers. Conservation initiatives in Kananaskis Country west of town, provide protection for rare fowl while the Sheep River Wildlife Sanctuary, deep in the park, safeguards the Bighorn Sheep’s native range. Through the summer months the Sanctuary allows visitors an opportunity to view many resident animals and migratory birds.

During the winter, the Sanctuary is closed to protect native animals’ breeding grounds and foraging activities, but the more easterly parts of Kananaskis Country, accessible through Turner Valley, remain open for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skating and other seasonal activities.
